By Aliyah Bey, Wellness Manager and Certified Nutritionist July 2023

“Homo sum, humani nihil a me alienum puto”

The quote "Homo sum, humani nihil a me alienum puto," meaning "I am a human being, nothing human can be alien to me," is a well-known phrase by the Roman playwright Terence. This Latin expression encapsulates the belief that as humans, we should have the capacity to comprehend and empathize with all aspects of humanity. It emphasizes that nothing relating to the human experience should seem strange or unfamiliar to us. I first came across this profound quote through the late and highly esteemed Maya Angelou during her interview. In her discussion, she emphasized the significance of perceiving others as fellow human beings and recognizing that we all possess the potential to act in various ways, regardless of how morally objectionable they may be. To me, this quote encourages the cultivation of understanding and compassion for others, irrespective of their behavior or differences. It serves as a reminder to embrace empathy and strive for deeper comprehension.

How does this idea correlate to wellness?

The idea expressed in the quote, "I am a human being, nothing human can be alien to me," can have a correlation to wellness in several ways:

  1. Self-Acceptance: Embracing the full range of human experiences and emotions, both positive and negative, is essential for overall wellness. Recognizing that all aspects of being human are valid and normal can help individuals accept and understand their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. This self-acceptance promotes mental and emotional well-being.

  2. Empathy and Connection: Understanding that nothing human is foreign or alien can foster empathy towards others. By recognizing that people share common experiences, struggles, and emotions, individuals can cultivate compassion and build meaningful connections with others. This sense of connection and empathy contributes to social wellness.

  3. Holistic Wellness: Wellness encompasses various dimensions, including physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual well-being. Embracing the full spectrum of human existence allows individuals to address these dimensions comprehensively. By acknowledging and attending to different aspects of wellness, individuals can strive for a more balanced and fulfilling life.

  4. Growth and Resilience: Recognizing that all human experiences are part of the human condition can inspire personal growth and resilience. Embracing challenges, setbacks, and failures as opportunities for learning and development can contribute to psychological well-being. It enables individuals to adapt, persevere, and cultivate a positive mindset.

Embracing Humanity's Interconnectedness

Overall, the profound idea conveyed by the quote encourages individuals to transcend narrow boundaries and adopt a broad perspective on human experiences. It calls for an open-mindedness that recognizes the interconnectedness of humanity. By embracing the full spectrum of human existence, individuals can not only enhance their own well-being but also contribute to the well-being of others and society as a whole.Embracing all aspects of humanity goes beyond mere acceptance; it involves developing empathy and compassion. When we recognize that nothing human should be alien to us, we become more attuned to the struggles, joys, and complexities of our fellow human beings. This deepened understanding cultivates empathy, allowing us to connect with others and to extend a helping hand when needed.
